J. Sydney Stone
J. Sydney Stone, a retired lawyer and a former board member of Avon Products, was 79 when he died in Brunswick, Georgia. He lived in Sea Island, Georgia, and kept a summer home in Greensboro, Vermont.
He was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and lived for many years in Bronxville, New York. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, he joined the law firm of Breed, Abbott & Morgan in 1926, became a partner in 1934, and retired in 1967.
Mr. Stone served on the Avon board from 1942 until 1974. He was also a director of Roosevelt Raceway, a president of the Bronxville Public Library, and — for more than forty years — a member and past president of the Anglers' Club of New York.
He married Mary Quarters Rhodes, joining the Stone and Rhodes lines. He was survived by his wife Mary; a son, John C. Stone II of Princeton, New Jersey; a daughter; and four grandchildren.
