Stone & Rhodes

About the archive

About this project

This site tells the family stories of the Stone family of Devon and Somerset and the Rhodes family of Kent — both before and after their emigration to the United States. It was first built in 2013 by John C. Stone II, who gathered parish records, wills, charts, maps, and photographs, and corresponded for years with cousins and researchers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Much has been learned and added in the years since. The Stone side in particular has received substantial updates — additional charts, reports, and the research notes that untangled long-standing puzzles. Tracing the Rhodes family of Kent and the Riley family of Staffordshire before the 18th century has been more difficult, and that side is built to grow.

With the passing of John C. Stone II in 2022, John III and Lisa Stone continue to care for the archive — making technical updates and adding content as it becomes available. The intent is the same as it has always been: to keep the record accurate, and to hand it on.

A note from the founder

"As the site develops I hope to add more charts, lists, maps, photos and text. I hope you will find information of interest here. If you find data errors, or can add new information of which I am unaware, please let me know." — John C. Stone II
