The Rhodes Family
The Rhodes side is thinner in the record than the Stone side, and harder to trace before the 18th century. It begins in Kent and reaches the United States within a few generations. This section starts compact and is built to grow as more material is added.
Thomas and Elizabeth Rhodes lived in Ash-next-Ridley, Kent, in the 18th century — a parish sometimes called Ash-by-Wrotham. Several generations of Rhodes lived here and in the neighboring parish of Ridley through the 18th and 19th centuries. Thomas's father was very likely John Rhodes of Deptford.
Thomas's grandson Charles Rhodes married Lucy Basing in Charlton, Kent in 1814, and the couple emigrated to the United States around 1829, settling in Pittsburgh. A large contingent of Rhodes lived for several generations in the Pittsburgh area. Charles and Lucy's great-granddaughter, Mary Quarters Rhodes, married John Sydney Stone in Paris in 1926 — the union that joined the two family lines gathered on this site.
Tracing the Rhodes of Kent and the Riley family of Staffordshire before the 18th century has been more difficult, and remains open research.
